KS2.Y34.R.WR – Reading - word reading
Pupils should be taught to:
KS2.Y34.R.WR.1 – Apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes (etymology and morphology) as listed in - see English appendix 1 , both to read aloud and to understand the meaning of new words they meet
KS2.Y34.R.WR.2 – Read further exception words, noting the unusual correspondences between spelling and sound, and where these occur in the word
KS2.Y34.R.C – Reading - comprehension
Pupils should be taught to:
KS2.Y34.R.C.1 – Develop positive attitudes to reading, and an understanding of what they read, by:
KS2.Y34.R.C.1.a: listening to and discussing a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks
KS2.Y34.R.C.1.b: reading books that are structured in different ways and reading for a range of purposes
KS2.Y34.R.C.1.c: using dictionaries to check the meaning of words that they have read
KS2.Y34.R.C.1.d: increasing their familiarity with a wide range of books, including fairy stories, myths and legends, and retelling some of these orally
KS2.Y34.R.C.1.e: identifying themes and conventions in a wide range of books
KS2.Y34.R.C.1.f: preparing poems and play scripts to read aloud and to perform, showing understanding through intonation, tone, volume and action

Pupils should be taught to:
KS2.Y34.W.T.1 – Use further prefixes and suffixes and understand how to add them - see English appendix 1
KS2.Y34.W.T.2 – Spell further homophones
KS2.Y34.W.T.3 – Spell words that are often misspelt - see English appendix 1
KS2.Y34.W.T.4 – Place the possessive apostrophe accurately in words with regular plurals [for example, girls', boys'] and in words with irregular plurals [for example, children's]
KS2.Y34.W.T.5 – Use the first 2 or 3 letters of a word to check its spelling in a dictionary
KS2.Y34.W.T.6 – Write from memory simple sentences, dictated by the teacher, that include words and punctuation taught so far
KS2.Y34.H – Handwriting
Pupils should be taught to:
KS2.Y34.H.1 – Use the diagonal and horizontal strokes that are needed to join letters and understand which letters, when adjacent to one another, are best left unjoined
KS2.Y34.H.2 – Increase the legibility, consistency and quality of their handwriting, [for example, by ensuring that the downstrokes of letters are parallel and equidistant, and that lines of writing are spaced sufficiently so that the ascenders and descenders of letters do not touch]
KS2.Y34.W.C – Writing - composition
Pupils should be taught to:
KS2.Y34.W.C.1 – Plan their writing by:
KS2.Y34.W.C.1.a: discussing writing similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar
KS2.Y34.W.C.1.b: discussing and recording ideas
KS2.Y34.W.C.2 – Draft and write by:
KS2.Y34.W.C.2.a: composing and rehearsing sentences orally (including dialogue), progressively building a varied and rich vocabulary and an increasing range of sentence structures English appendix 2

KS2.Y34.W.VGP.1.c: choosing nouns or pronouns appropriately for clarity and cohesion and to avoid repetition
KS2.Y34.W.VGP.1.d: using conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time and cause
KS2.Y34.W.VGP.1.e: using fronted adverbials
